Based on real events, Valkyrie is the story of one of many plots to assassinate Adolf Hitler, led by Colonel Claus von Staffenburg.

If you’re a suspense junkie, this movie is quite for you. If not, well, it might not be the best way to spend your Friday night. However, think about giving it a try anyway. We are talking about an assassination plot to blow up Hitler, the highest enemy we had during WWII, so in actuality there is a serious need for stealth and quiet, not to charge in there with guns blazing and tanks exploding. If you can bare that simple thought in mind, Valkyrie actually gets quite watchable.

Tom Cruise returns as one of those roles that you really wouldn’t think belongs to him, the eternally stoic and strong Colonel Staffenburg, and pulls it off rather nicely. But then we are talking about the same guy who pulled off being a forest child easily in Legend, this should be a walk in the park for him. The eye-patch and the fake eye bit are kind of entertaining, Cruise manages to make the eye-patch look like it was always and forever part of his uniform.

Eddie Izzard, a favorite comic of mine, enters this movie as turncoat helper General Erich Fellgiebel, again proving his versatility as an established actor as well as a hell of a comedian.

Keep in mind, sorry to say folks, this movie doesn’t actually have what I would consider a happy ending. But then, it’s about an assassination attempt (and failure), with the likelihood of death for everyone involved at the end anyway. Think about why they do what they do, the sacrifices these brave men made to bring down the Enemy, and I think you’ll agree with me that Valkyrie is a movie worth cheering over!

The eye-patch will attract the curious.
