Post-apocalypse human survivors travel the Nevada desert, searching for a last place left on earth not overrun by the infection that turns people into terrible cannibal zombies, joined by the pivotal fighter and savior Alice (Milla Jovovich).

I haven’t played any of the video games, so I refuse to comment on the movies’ accuracy as far as that goes, I have no idea. However, the movie itself does indeed rule. And surprisingly, Extinction actually works as a stand-alone movie. The intro given at the beginning of the movie, that which explains the first two movie plots, is very concise without being condescending. You don’t have to be a fan of the games or even the movie series to enjoy this particular movie. It might help if you enjoy cannibal zombies, mad scientist monsters, unique death scenes, a murder of zombie crows (that rocks my world), and things like that though. And then there’s Alice herself, played by a smoking hot Milla Jovovich, who whips through zombies with a pair of Kukri knives like they were butter, and has a fine balance of vulnerable human confusion and sheer science-experiment badassery.

Fan of the games, previous movies, or not, Extinction is worth seeing, more than once even. In a time of rather formulaic zombie movies, this one flings surprises like Halloween candy!
