Hellboy and the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense is back, to fight in the world of elves and fairies, against the unstoppable Golden Army!

Okay, be prepared for a sequel that way overshoots the first movie. Which is to say, this one was made by the same guy who did Pan’s Labyrinth, and anyone who’s seen that movie can tell you, the visuals are astounding. And unfortunately for Hellboy, the visuals in this movie seem to steal the show from the main characters. There’s still plenty of one-liners and tension between Hellboy and Liz, and even Abe Sapien gets a bit of a romance this time. But everything is overshadowed by the Faeries and trolls and such. Especially at the Troll Market.

So, at the beginning of the movie, we have Hellboy at a younger age (those buck teeth have got to go), being read the story of the Golden Army by his much younger father. How when the world was shared by Man and Elves, they fought over everything and the Elven King had the Golden Army made and it destroyed everything in its path, and the Elven King was ashamed and called a final truce, leaving the mechanical Golden Army to sleep in a secret place. And now, much later, the King’s son Prince Nuada has come back to wreak havoc on humanity, mainly because he can. With much destruction caused by magical or natural creatures that Prince Nuada somehow just managed to acquire, but hey, more power to him.

Rather than give any surprises away, I’ll simply say this: if you liked Pan’s Labyrinth, or movies like it, you will adore this one. Hellboy and Abe and Liz were already supernatural, lets toss them into Fairyworld and watch the fireworks!
