Hundreds of years after humanity has all left earth, the robots left behind to clean up the planet have dwindled to one determined little guy cursed with curiosity, WALLE.

It amazed me that Pixar actually managed to pull off a movie where the main characters really don’t say much other than their names a lot. There’s a lot of exasperated sighing “Wall-eee” from the love interest robot Eva, and a lot of adorable “Eeeee-va” sighing from Walle. Range of emotion is expressed beautifully anyway.

So it’s several hundred years in the future, Earth is overrun by trash and human excess in the form of a corporation called BUY N LARGE, and all the humans are gone out into space. Left behind are robots called Walle (Waster Allocation Load Lifter, Earth-Class), of whom only one is left, and he is wonderful. He has his own apartment, repair parts, and a simple joy in everything he does. Walle even has a pet! (Yes, it’s a cockroach. Deal with it.) And then one day, the modern robot surveyor Eva gets dropped off by a ship. And Walle, suddenly not so alone, is determined to go with Eva when she gets suddenly picked up only a short while later.

Rather than giving anything else away, I say go see this movie. It is a little preachy, as far as how humanity is seen after several hundred years of being catered to by robots, and what they did to Earth before leaving it, but on the whole, WALLE reminds us of that wonderful childlike joy in discovering the new.

WALLE is an uplifting ride for any DVD collection!
