In Paris, a US Senator’s aide who wants to get into the spy world, gets paired with a wise-cracking maniac to stop a terrorist attack.

It’s amazing how Travolta’s managed to carve himself a career out of the ashes of things like Saturday Night Fever. This particular film has him running around with a shaved head, a goatee, a leather jacket with all the geegaws you can imagine, and big big BIG guns. And a ‘tude, but that’s standard for most of his characters. Then we have Jonathon Reese Myers, as James Reece. He does a fine job as the harried but competent omg we’re now out in the field with a nutjob as our leader brand new agent, but it is a little odd to keep hearing people call him Reece, if you know the actors full name beforehand. Kasia Smutniak performs as love interest turned psycho Caroline, and I’m sorry to say her part in the whole scheme was entirely predictable. Not necessarily due to bad acting on Kasia’s part, only that really, there were few other options presented, unless the movie gods wanted to throw in a new big baddie at the very end.

Not a whole lot to do with the thinking and plot department, From Paris With Love remains a fine blow-stuff-up with a wisecrack and a grin style movie. For those of you fans of Travolta’s work, and I am, this film is kind of an insane combination of Training Day and Swordfish (another fine performance from Travolta in that one). The actions scenes, are there are plenty, are great entertainment without making you think too much about how that would actually work in real life. Never mind – blow it up and say something witty about a Royale with cheese!

Everyone needs the brain break from the depressing films of today, and From Paris With Love provides in glorious shrapnel shards of fun!
