A blind woman receives an eye transplant that allows her to see into the spirit world.

Yes, this is a remake of the Hong Kong film Jian Gui, and yes, the first version was better. That aside, this isn’t a bad take on the original story. The Chinese mysticism and sorcery is replaced by, apparently, Mexican magics. Which would have been fine I suppose, if they had gone a bit more into the culture behind the sorcery, and frankly they didn’t. But the basic story is still there: the blind violinist Sydney gets a cornea transplant from a Mexican woman who was known to have visions, and therefore begins experiencing visions herself, and manages to figure it all out with the help of her eye doctor in time enough to save a lot of people from death.

Jessica Alba does a fair job for the role they gave her, even going so far as to take violin and Braille lessons for six months to bone up for the part. It is a bit odd to see her as a brunette though, as we’re so used to the blonde Invisible Woman.

Too many clashing spiritual beliefs and not enough explanation make for a vaguely muddled and not very scary movie.
