Soon after seeing a woman who looks just like her drive past in a car, Gina McVey suffers a car crash and strange things begin happening to her and her family.

So, for the first film of Horrorfest 2008 for me to watch, it’s not bad. Not fantastic either, sadly. It starts off rather similar to Memento, which I adored, but seems to lose it’s way about halfway through the movie. A lot of reliance on building the tension in the scene, build and build and then yes, there is a dead body with cataract eyes, or a murderous killer and a splash of blood. However, the tension built doesn’t equal the culmination of the scene, it seems to fall flat. The plot of the story itself seems rather muddled and left open-ended on purpose. Most of the attention is centered around Gina herself, which leads me to think that it’s her somehow who’s been going around killing people. But then why, when other members of her family or their loved ones are attacked, do the murderers look like clones? And what’s with the father staring at the window at the end of the movie, does that mean he knew what was going on all along or what?

Lena Headey of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and 300 fame, stars as main character Gina McVey, and actually delivers the best performance for the movie. It turns out she really can convey the shivering scared female and the holy crap you’re a complete psycho role in the same movie, good for her.

The After Dark Films aren’t for everyone, but The Broken is a pretty fair film to startle yourself with.
